Video Speech Contests

Video Speech contests in Toastmasters competitions are a specific type of speech contest designed for members of undistricted clubs and provisional Districts. These contests recognize outstanding speeches that are recorded live during club-level competitions. The first-place winners from these club contests then have their speeches judged by a panel of experienced Toastmasters.

Unlike the broader International Speech Contest, which can advance through Area, Division, and District levels to the World Championship of Public Speaking®, the Video Speech Contest does not progress beyond the club level. The rules for the Video Speech Contest generally follow those of the International Speech Contest, requiring contestants to present a five- to seven-minute speech on any subject they choose.

Notable past winners, such as Angela Heath (2022 first place), Anum Qadri (2022 second place), and Srushti V. (2022 third place), have shared insights into their successful approaches. Angela Heath emphasized using the camera frame effectively and relying on passion rather than virtual backgrounds or PowerPoint. Anum Qadri highlighted extensive practice, seeking evaluations from multiple mentors, and maintaining strong eye contact and sincerity to demonstrate that being online is a connection, not a hurdle. Srushti V. focused on the importance of active listening and providing constructive feedback, particularly for speakers from non-English regions.

While the Video Speech Contest is distinct, Toastmasters also conducts other speech contests, including Humorous, Evaluation, Tall Tales, Table Topics®, and Online contests. The organization has also adapted to virtual formats, with many contests being held online since April 2020 due to health restrictions, and resources are available for competing in and organizing online contests. The Speech Contest Rulebook provides comprehensive guidelines for all Toastmasters speech contests.
